02 October 2007, Tuesday

Today was the first real sightseeing day and we went straight to Fremantle (Freo). After fighting through the rush hour traffic
we had breakfast at Gino's at the Cappuccino Strip in Freo. Nice area, but unfortunately the weather was not very nice and
Freo really needs sunshine to enjoy the harbour and marina area. So we decided to see the Freemantle Prison. Mary was
talking about the Tunnel Tour at the Prison not knowing what it was. When we arrived at the Prison we had 5 minutes to
make up our mind before either tour would leave, so we quickly said yes to the Tunnel Tour not knowing what it was. The
questions which they asked us made Mary a little uneasy about the tour, but too late we already paid. 5 people only and the
guide we entered the prison and make our way to the tunnel system which was mainly used for water storage and supply for
the city build by prisoners, not convicts as the prison was. First you get into a white overall and afterwards you get a
climbing harness and hard-hat with lamp - hmmm what does that all mean. We had to climb down a ladder about 20 meters
into the tunnel system with a sophisticated  safety system which attached to the harness. Down in the tunnel we had to walk
through small tunnels to have a look at part of the whole tunnel system. After that we took a small boat and paddled around
the other part of the tunnel system which is still flooded by the water storage. All together the tour took 2.5 hours and was
quite nice. Unfortunately, they do not allow cameras or anything being taken down into the tunnel system, so only pictures
from us looking ridiculousin our gear after the tour. After the tunnel tour, we also took the Doing Time tour to see the inside of
the prison which was o.k. Because of the two tours we did we had no more time to do anything else in Freo and missed out
on the Shipwreck and Maritime Museum. Another reason to come back one day. At night we had dinner at Ken and Jude's,
very nice people and had a nice chat about everything and the world. Rodge joined us later after Dinner and after he had
brought Robyn back to the hospital. Unfortunately Robyn was in hospital the entire time we were in Perth, but she is getting
much better. Here are the pictures from today.
Adrian from Albany doing the ramp.
I almost slipped off the ramp, see the tyre on the ramp -
oops.
Rodge doing the ramp.
A last chat with Mike, Steve and Brian from JOCWA.
Burns Beach, just North of where we stayed.
The clouds made for a very nice sunset, but freezing
cold. Below more pictures from the sunset.
We look quite ridiculous in that gear
- funny.
The prison was build by convicts and
the cells were quite small.
The prison was
actually used until
1991 as the high
security for
Freemantle and
closed due to
sanitation issues.
No water or toilets
in the cells -
buckets instead -
nice...
